TECHNO Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are crucial in tile installations to accommodate the natural movement and expansion and contraction of building materials due to temperature changes, moisture fluctuations, and settling.

  • Large Areas: Incorporate expansion joints in large tile installations, especially those exceeding 20 feet (6 meters) in any direction. Large expanses are more prone to movement and require allowances for expansion and contraction.
  • Transitions Between Rooms: Install expansion joints at transitions between different rooms, particularly when the rooms have different environmental conditions or when the flooring material changes.
  • Changes in Plane: Use expansion joints at changes in plane, such as where the floor meets the wall, to accommodate movement at these transition points.
  • Adjacent to Fixed Elements: Install expansion joints adjacent to fixed elements like columns, posts, or stairs. These areas are less likely to experience movement and can help prevent tile cracking.
  • Natural Break Points: Identify natural break points in the substrate, such as changes in substrate materials, to install expansion joints.
  • Exterior Installations: Outdoor tile installations, subject to temperature variations and weather conditions, require expansion joints to accommodate the expansion and contraction of materials.
